Shepshed is almost equidistant from Leicester, Nottingham and Derby. It is adjacent to the M1,not far from East Midlands Airport and is a gateway to the National Forest .

The name Shepshed means a hill where sheep were grazed
and may refer to Iveshead a local landmark.
Hosiery and knitwear trades provided the largest amount of employment in the early 1900s replacing the cottage type industry of framework knitters in the early 1800s.
Field Street (photo1920s) was one of the main
thoroughfares of the 'largest village' in Leicestershire.
The Co-operative established 1866 occupied premises on both the north and south sides (now Vantage pharmacy) of this prosperous street.
The second half of the twentieth century has seen Shepshed change considerably with a shift away from the traditional textile industry .New industries have sprung up and unemployment is currently less than 2%.
Shepshed has grown significantly
over the last thirty years from a compact market town of
4,000 people to a current population of 13,200. 
In 1999 the Shepshed Partnership, in conjunction with the Shell Better Britain campaign and the Historical Trust Fund produced a leaflet “Discovering Shepshed’s Secrets” which is a walk around Shepshed, highlighting some of the town’s treasures e.g the Style-TwyChel thatched building, St Boltoph’s Church and the Old Queens head. . It provides a glimpse of the past and gives visitors the opportunity to sample local shops, eating houses, the Friday Market, Building Society, Bank and the Park.
